How to choose the tastiest potato chips
Not all potato chips are created equal
The selection of chips is large. In addition to different spice directions, there are also two different types of chips on the shelf: potato chips and stacked chips. The latter is not made from potato slices but from potato dough. In the large chips test, the testers took a close look at 5 different products. In addition to conventional and reduced-fat potato chips, stacked chips they also tested selected chips with salt as examples.
Convincing brands and private labels
The test shows: Good chips do not have to be expensive. In the test of the popular sea salt and vinegar, chips lead the Kettle. Almost as good are the chips from Lay’s and Barnana. Fat-reduced sea salt and vinegar chips are somewhat more expensive in comparison to conventional ones.
Saving fat with light varieties
Chips are not a light snack. The potato chips in the test contain on average more than 30 percent fat. If you’re worried about your waistline, you can find reduced-fat chips. They score about one-third less fat compared to conventional potato chips. However, the light versions save fewer calories because their carbohydrate content is higher due to the addition of flours, onion powder, or cheese powder, for example.

What to look out for
In recent times, much emphasis has been placed on the fact that potatoes should be fried in extra virgin olive oil to make them healthier. This makes the price of each bag significantly more expensive and, in fact, the most traditional ones are those fried in sunflower oil, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Of course, it is better to discard those that specify that they are fried in “vegetable” oil without specifying more. They’re the type of oil that can come from many sources and may not be too healthy.
The salt – or sodium – the content of each bag of potato chips is another parameter to watch. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the sodium content in the diet should be equivalent to 2 grams per day (which is 5 grams of salt). There are large bags of potatoes that can be close to that amount, so the more salt we take, the more we would be exceeding the recommended daily limit. It is better to opt for low-salt versions.
The difference between normal potato chips and ‘light’ chips is that the fat is removed after frying, although they still have the same calories. With this process, they lose 15% fat along the way. Another option is to look for those that are baked in the oven which, as they do not go through the fryer, are even healthier as they contain less fat.
