An ultrasonic cleaner can be used to clean jewelry, glasses, coins, and even medical products such as braces or dentures. The cleaning is thorough but always gentle, as chemical additives can be completely dispensed with.

How does an ultrasonic cleaner work?

An ultrasonic cleaner emits waves in the ultrasonic range during operation. However, these sound waves are not responsible for cleaning in the device. By generating these waves, an overpressure, as well as a negative pressure, is created alternately.

This causes fine bubbles to form in the water, which attaches themselves to the dirt particles of the objects to be cleaned.

The cleaning principle of ultrasonic devices is quickly explained.

Due to the constant wave motion in the water, the bubbles swell very strongly until they eventually burst. This principle is called cavitation in physics.

This releases a lot of energy, and the deposited dirt is finally loosened by very strong pressure waves. The resulting pressure wave when the bubbles burst also generates a water jet, which is called a “microjet”.

This virtually washes away incrustations and dirt. Since the “imploding” bubbles are very small, they can reach hard-to-reach places during the cleaning process, where normal cleaning would otherwise be difficult.

The size of the bubbles that are created depends mainly on the frequency at which the ultrasonic cleaning device operates. The higher the sound frequency, the smaller the bubbles. Commercially available ultrasonic units clean at a frequency between 30,000 and 45,000 Hz.

The bubbles have sufficient power to loosen the strongest soiling but are small enough to reach every crack.

What types of ultrasonic cleaners are there?

A contact lens cleaner has a much higher ultrasonic frequency (usually > 58,000 Hz), is much smaller, and should always be used with a special care solution. This thoroughly removes dirt from the lens pair and disinfects it in the long term.

Any bacteria and fungi present are reliably removed so that the eyes are always protected from germs. Thanks to the ultrasonic principle, contact lens cleaners work extremely gently and are best suited for both hard and soft lenses.

Since ultrasonic cleaners are very versatile, they are also ideally suited for cleaning dentures, braces, and other dental products.

Usually, dentures are cleaned conventionally under cold water with a soft toothbrush. The goal is to brush away plaque, food debris, and the like. Auxiliary agents such as vinegar or bleach are tips that are readily given, but their application involves a lot of effort.

Care is much easier with an ultrasonic cleaner for dentures. Thanks to ultrasound, all dirt particles are gently removed, even from the interstices. Deposits are reliably avoided and the dentures retain their original white shade.

Note on tarnished silver: The patina that forms on silver after a long time is not dirt, but silver sulfide, which is formed by a chemical process called oxidation. Even the best ultrasonic cleaners will not help in this case. It is recommended to use special immersion baths for oxidized and thus tarnished silver jewelry.

Jewelry cleaner

With a good ultrasonic cleaner, you can not only clean your glasses but also restore jewelry to its former glory. A jewelry cleaner with ultrasound reliably removes discolorations and dirt particles.

Especially jewelry made of precious metals such as gold, silver, palladium, or platinum can be perfectly freed from dirt by ultrasound. Ladies’ jewelry in particular is often very playfully designed and is therefore very difficult to clean.

If you want to buy an ultrasonic bath, then the size of the device is an important criterion. For larger items, you need correspondingly more space and should reach for a device with more filling volume.


The required power depends primarily on the size of the device. Small ultrasonic baths usually have power values between 35 and 50 watts. This is sufficient for cleaning bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and glasses.

Larger devices, however, require more power. For this reason, ultrasonic baths with a large tank (from 2,000ml) usually also have higher power values from 100 watts. If you compare ultrasonic cleaners, you will notice that the frequencies of the devices often differ a little. Basically, the frequency of ultrasonic baths for home use is 35 to 43 kHz. Timer / Time switch

An integrated timer can be found on all popular models. In a cheap ultrasonic cleaner, the cleaning process is started automatically with a duration of several minutes (usually 3 to 5 minutes) when the device is switched on.

Integrated heating

Most compact ultrasonic cleaners for home use are equipped with a fixed stainless steel tank. This means that the water tank cannot be removed separately. Consequently, the entire unit must be moved to dispose of the used water.

A much more convenient solution is an ultrasonic bath with a removable water tank. Once cleaning is complete, the tank can be easily removed and the dirty water disposed of.

Other equipment features

All ultrasonic units are equipped with a cleaning basket in which the objects to be cleaned are placed. This prevents contact with the stainless steel tank and provides the best possible protection for the objects. In some models, additional holders are also included in the scope of delivery.
